We suggest that all homeowners have a fall and spring clean-up so that your yard can look it’s best and be it’s healthiest in the warmer months of the year. If you didn’t have a fall clean-up than you need a spring cleanup for sure! When a fall clean-up is skipped, you will have a full summer’s worth of leaves in your yard along with a winter’s worth of rot. Your yard will small and be more susceptible to diseases.
Raking the Yard
Because you have a full summers worth of wet and heavy leaves in your yard, it’s going to take awhile to rake and get rid of them. Once in a pile or piles they will need to be removed or added to a compost pile.
Picking up Twigs, Sticks, and Branches
Trees drop a lot of twigs, sticks, and the occasional branch over the wintertime and we need to pick these up and dispose of them before the warmer weather helps them to rot also. These need to be removed or burned.
Dethatching Your Lawn
The layer of your lawn that contains dead grass and other organic matter is thatch. You want to remove the thatch so the living parts of your lawn can be fed easier by exposing the soil to sunlight, oxygen, and water. You will want to have your yard dethatched before your first mowing.
Aerating and Overseeding Your Lawn
Aeration is the punching of tiny little hoes in your lawn to loosen its soil so it can be exposed to oxygen, water, fertilizer, and other nutrients. Overseeding is adding fresh grass-seed over your entire lawn. The new grass will strengthen your existing lawn and prevent disease.
