There is no substitute for spending quality time on a deck with your loved ones. If your house already has a deck, you will agree with the incredible benefits of having an outdoor space. A deck area is more than just a place to sit. It is space to entertain, chill with friends and family, or grab a quiet moment for yourself. There are many different types of decks. Depending on the size of your outdoor space, you can place decking in any unused side yard, or a garage, or even against a hill or a slope. There are a whole host of deck ideas we would like to share with you in this article.
Attached Deck
An attached deck is one of the smartest ways to add square footage and value to your home. Decks usually have close to a dollar-for-dollar return on the investment – around 80% give or take a few percentage points. It’s one of the best home improvements you can make to drive up your home’s worth. With that in mind you should be able to ballpark about what the appraiser will determine. Attached decks can provide additional living space and even offer shade if you include an overhead roof.
Wrap-around Deck
What is considered a wrap-around deck? A wrap-around deck goes around your entire home or most of your home to provide uninterrupted views of your property. While most homes just have a back deck, a wrap-around deck lets you take in the scenery of your entire property. The benefit of a wraparound deck assists with air circulation throughout your home when access doors are open and allows you to follow the sun/shade throughout the day.
Multi-level Deck
A multi-level deck is just what it sounds like, a deck with multiple layers set at different heights, usually connected by a stairway or ramped path. These decks can make good use of sloped ground. To provide a tiered effect to your decking, it creates a unique feature in your garden. This type of deck is the perfect choice if you have a large property. Or if you have tricky terrain, hills, slopes, or rocky landscaping, a multi-tier deck might be all that you can accommodate. A multi-level deck adds strong visual appeal to your space, it can act as an elaborate design all on its own.
Detached Deck
According to the main code provision for footings, the only requirement for building a deck that is freestanding is that it must have a minimum footing depth of 12 inches below the undisturbed ground surface. There is no need to extend a footing below the frost line, as is required for standard decks. A detached deck is more like an island. It can be positioned anywhere on your property with access by stairs or a pathway. It is a great idea for building over areas with poor drainage or bumpy, rocky, and uneven terrain. Add landscaping bushes or flower beds around it and have a beautiful addition to your property.
Rooftop Deck
A rooftop deck adds outdoor living space to your home; however, you will want to make sure you’ll enjoy it often enough to make it worth the cost. Check zoning rules before you begin the design process for a rooftop deck, because some areas might have restrictions or not allow them. These outdoor, constructed spaces are located on the top of some homes or over the garage if you have a flat roof. A deck like this is perfect for urban area homes. It offers better views, more privacy, and picks up breezes more with the elevation. Many of these roof gardens are attractively landscaped as well as finished with fencing for safety reasons.
Three Most Common Wood Choices
Keep in mind that the three most common choices are cedar, hardwood, and pressure treated wood. The cedar and hardwood both have resistance to rotting and termites, while pressure treated wood is more resistant to water and moisture. In addition to the woods there is composite decking and polymer decks. Composite decking is made of wood and resin and lasts a long time. Polymer decks are made entirely of PVC (a tough chemically resistant synthetic resin). Composite materials do not need to be sealed or stained. Speak to an expert in depth before deciding on the type of decking best suited for your property.
